After 31 years of waiting, Vietnamese players have taken the throne at the 15th Asian Xiangqi (Chinese chess) Individual Championship on November 4 with two gold medals in the men’s and women’s individual event.

On the men’s side, HCM City’s Nguyen Hoang Lam brought home the title. Lam and his teammate Bui Duong Tran shocked spectators by fending off the event’s powerhouse nation of China, whose players did not even make the final. Lam played Tran in the final round, with Lam eventually coming out on top.

Chinese masters Lu Qin, five-time world champion, and Wang Yue Fei were knocked out in the event’s preliminary stage. It is the first time in 31 years that Chinese players missed out on spots in the semi-finals.

On the women’s side, Ngo Lan Huong defeated Chen Li Chun of China in the final to take the title.

At the Asian event four years ago, Chen took the title while Vietnam’s Dam Thi Thuy Dung was the runner-up.

The Asian event, which was held at Seac Multisport Pavilion in Macau, China, attracted the participation of 20 male and 10 female players from 16 countries and territories, including Indonesia, Myanmar, Brunei, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Japan, India and Australia.

At the 14th event held in Malaysia, Vietnam’s Nguyen Hoang Yen brought home a bronze.
