Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim ends Vietnam visit
VOV.VN - Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his entourage left Hanoi on July 21, concluding their two-day official visit to Vietnam at the invitation of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.
Before leaving Vietnam, Anwar met with Vietnamese President Vo Van Thuong, who proposed that the two countries further support each other at regional and international forums, maintain ASEAN’s common stance on the East Sea issue, effectively implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), and work towards an effective and substantive Code of Conduct for regional peace, stability, cooperation and development.
He conveyed the Malaysian King’s invitation to Thuong to visit the island state this year to mark 50 years of diplomatic ties between the two countries, and said he would direct relevant agencies of Malaysia to work closely with Vietnamese agencies to well prepare for the trip.
The two leaders also stressed the need for Vietnam and Malaysia to step up cooperation in defense, security, economy, trade, investment, education - training, tourism, culture, food security and people-to-people exchanges.
The Malaysian PM also meet with National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue, who suggested facilitating cooperation between the legislative bodies of the two countries.
The same day, the Malaysian Prime Minister also spent time visiting the Street Book and sampling Vietnamese coffee with Vietnamese Prime Ministser Pham Minh Chinh in Hanoi. Chinh introduced the Street Book and autographed some books as gifts to his guest.
During their talks on July 20, the two PMs agreed to effectively implement existing cooperation mechanisms, aiming to raise two-way trade turnover between the two countries in a more balanced direction. They also witnessed the signing of two cooperation documents between Vietnam and Malaysia.
Also on July 20, the Malaysian PM met with Vietnamese Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong who expressed his wish the two countries would share experience in combating corruption.
Malaysia is Vietnam’s second largest trading partner in Southeast Asia and the ninth largest in the world. It is one of Vietnam’s top 10 foreign investors, with 718 valid projects valued at US$13 billion.
