A bomb blast claimed the lives of seven civilians outside a NATO base in southeastern Afghanistan on May 13, a local official said, after Taliban militants had earlier launched a strike in the same town of Khost.

A car packed with explosives wounded another 21 civilians, according to an official from Khost province. He said that all the victims were workers at the NATO base on the outskirts of the town.

Despite a surge in foreign troops, violence in Afghanistan has climbed to its worst level since Allied forces toppled the Taliban in 2001.

"US forces ... have encircled the area. The toll may rise," said provincial official Wazir Padshah.

Khost houses a large number of NATO troops, mainly from the US.
