U Minh Thuong receives ASEAN Heritage Park certificate

(VOV) -Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) Bui Canh Tuyen on August 12 handed over the ASEAN Heritage Park certificate to Kien Giang’s U Minh Thuong National Park.

The MoNRE said U Minh Thuong, which is highly praised for its bio-diversity, is one of Vietnamese national parks joining ASEAN’s third Peatland project.

The national park covers more than 21,000ha of An Minh Bac and Minh Thuan hamlets, including 8,038ha in the core zone and the remaining in the buffer zone.

Its jungle consists of 3,000ha of mangroves and is home for 243 kinds of faunas, 32 species of animals, 186 species of birds, 39 species of reptiles and 34 species of fish.

Many of them are listed as rare and endangered species that require strict protection.

U Minh Thuong is Vietnam’s fifth ASEAN Heritage Park recognised after Hoang Lien in Lao Cai province, Ba Be in Bac Kan province, Chu Mom Ray in Kontum province and Kon Ka Kinh in Gia Lai province.
