The eighth ASEAN-India Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) opened in Vientiane, Laos on April 27, drawing the participation of representatives from the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

During the two-day meeting, delegates will discuss various fields of co-operation, particularly the economic and development co-operation between the ASEAN and India; the implementation of agreements reached at the 4th ASEAN-India Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia late last year; and the projects within the framework of the ASEAN-India Action Programme.

They will review the mutual assistance in the ASEAN integration process and narrowing the development gap between old and new member countries of the bloc; the areas of co-operation, which India could help ASEAN-member countries such as English training and information technology.

The delegates will also review the advantages and disadvantages during the implementation of co-operation proposals and projects.

India will undertake the role of ASEAN-India co-ordinator beginning July 2006.
