Electronics retailers predict the prices of consumer electronics will continue to fall in 2009, especially after a new economic partnership agreement was signed by Vietnam and Japan.

Under the Vietnam-Japan agreement, import duties on consumer electronics from Japan will be slashed over the next 5-10 years, with first reductions to take effect in the middle of 2009.

The Director of Sony Electronics Vietnam, Kimihiro Itokicho, says taxes on Sony televisions, laptops and digital cameras imported directly from Japan would fall by 2.5 percent to 4.5 percent. Meanwhile, HCM City retailers say that consumer electronics prices are already falling as part of an overall market trend.

Most made-in-Japan products in Vietnam are imported from a third country and will not be affected by the new agreement. Only one percent of these products are shipped directly from Japan, says Nguyen Minh Thu from the Thien Hoa Electronics Supermarket in HCM City.
