Man cuts sister’s leg in St. Paul hospital

(VOV) - An alleged drug addict attacked his sister in Hanoi’s Saint Paul Hospital during the early hours of January 2, almost amputating her right leg.

Forty-three-year-old Tran Tuan Khuong committed the crime in the hospital’s Neurosurgery Department at around 03:00AM. His sister, 51-year-old Tran Thanh Dung, was sleeping in a ward with 10 other patients.

The witnessing patients screamed for help. A passing on-duty nurse called for colleagues and security guards to intervene.

The man resisted fiercely but was eventually subdued and restrained.

Dung was taken to the intensive care unit for emergency treatment. She received painkillers and tranquilizers.

St. Paul Hospital Deputy Director Nguyen Cong To said Dung’s right leg was severed one third of the way through and surgically repairing the damage would be a formidable challenge.

Ba Dinh District Police Chief Colonel Nguyen Xuan Dinh said Khuong, a suspected drug addict, has been detained for investigations.

Khuong confessed that in his delirium he believed amputating his sister’s leg would rid her of a haunting malevolent ghost. He said he was unable to control himself.

Police investigations are continuing.
