Vietnam and the US will launch a major conservation programme on August 1 to preserve biodiversity and improve management of natural resources in Vietnam’s largest river basin.

The Dong Nai River Basin Conservation Landscape Project, to be funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID), aims to raise average incomes for local poor people.


The goals of the US$4 million programme in Binh Phuoc, Dong Nai and Lam Dong provinces include restoring and maintaining the local ecosystems, promoting sustainable financing for conservation, improving the livelihoods of poor residents, and strengthening environmental governance and institutional management. The project will be on biodiversity conservation by restoring the degraded ecosystems and protecting large areas of flora and wildlife and giving local residents incentives for resource management.


The project will be jointly implemented by the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and Winrock International, a non-profit organisations specializing in rural development and sustainable resource management with
the Vietnamese Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the World Conservation Union playing key supporting roles.
