The Prime Minister has decided to approve the national energy development strategy till 2020 with a vision to 2025.

Under the strategy, Vietnam will strive to ensure sufficient supplies of energy to meet the demand for socio-economic development, improve the accuracy in assessing primary energy sources, and step up cooperation with other nations in the region and the world to probe and explore additional energy sources.

In Vietnam, energy is mainly provided by coal, hydroelectricity, gas and renewable energies. In addition, the country still imports power from other nations.

Le Tuan Phong, deputy head of the Energy Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade said that the total investment capital for the power sector was US$80 billion for the period 2006-2025. The coal sector is expected to take strong measures to provide sufficient coal for the national economy in the reviewed period.

Under the strategy, Vietnam will explore and assess coal basins in the northeastern part of the country this year and in the Red River Delta in 2015 as well as increasing investment in coal exploration in Laos, Cambodia and Africa.

The oil and gas sector aims to develop additional oil fields and expand new ones by laying gas pipelines to provide gas for power stations, draw up comprehensive plan for using gas in the south and northeastern region, develop oil and gas processing technology and complete the construction of petro-chemical and refineries on schedule.

Renewable and new energies are also seen as a viable source of power for the country. It is forecast that the rate of renewable and new energy sources will increase to around 3 percent of the country’s energy needs by 2010, 5 percent by 2020 and 11 percent by 2050.
