The Government has committed VND75 billion from the State budget for its malaria programme in 2008 with a focus on measures to prevent malaria and reduce the morbidity and mortality rates by 5 percent each.

The budget and its targets were made public at a workshop jointly held by the Ministry of Health and the Malaria, Bacteria and Insect Institute in Northern Lao Cai province on March 4.

The 2008 programme will concentrate on communication campaigns in areas with high-risk exposure to the mosquito-borne disease, such as the Central Highlands, central region, southeastern region and northern mountainous provinces.

It will also roll out preventative measures in these areas, such as spraying mosquito repellent and soaking mosquito-nets.

The budget will also ensure supply of 1 million anti-malarial doses and encourage the use of anti-malarial medicine Arterakin in targeted areas.

The Health Ministry said medicines will be delivered to hamlets and communes in order to prevent supplies being stockpiled in stores under district or provincial management only.

In 2007, the country managed to keep the epidemic under control with just one outbreak where 21 out of 318 locals contracted malaria. No-one died from the outbreak T
he number of high-risk areas also reduced by 44.7 percent compared to 2006 to 245.
