Vietnam has great chances to export its farm products, especially seafood, tea and coffee, to Russia – a big trade partner of Vietnam in Europe, said Luong Le Phuong, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Mr Phuong made the affirmation in an interview granted to Moscow-based VOV correspondent Diep Anh on the sidelines of the September 23 seminar to promote Vietnam’s agro-forestry and aquatic products in the Russian market. Following are excerpts from the interview.

VOV: What do you think about the prospects for Vietnam’s agro-forestry and aquatic products in the Russian market?

Mr Phuong: Vietnam’s agro-forestry and aquatic exports to the Russian market have recently increased sharply along with a rise in bilateral trade recently. In addition, the quality of exports has been greatly improved and met the Russian consumers’ requirements. Seafood (mostly freshwater fish), tea and coffee are prospective export items in this market apart from other commodities such as flowers, fruit and rice.

More than ten Vietnamese enterprises introduced their products to Russian customers at an international food exhibition held in Moscow recently in the hope that Russian partners will be keen on Vietnam’s exports.

VOV: Are there any solutions that would boost agro-forestry and aquatic exports to the Russian market?

Mr Phuong: At present, two-way trade turnover between Vietnam and Russia have not matched both countries’ potential. This seminar is also one of strategies for exporting Vietnam’s products to the Russian market. We have coordinated with the Vietnamese Embassy and trade office in Russia, the Russian Federation Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RF CCI) and Russia’s Federal Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance Service (VPSS) to boost trade cooperation in the long term.

However, the most important task is to strengthen cooperation among import and export enterprises from both countries including enterprises in the Russian community. It is also necessary to boost cooperation between the National Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Quality Assurance Department (NAFIQAD) and Russia’s Federal Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance Service (VPSS).

To this end, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) has recently signed cooperative agreements with the two agencies, implementing the exchange of high-level delegations to inspect the quality of products.

In the following years, we will organise trips with the increasing number of enterprises participating in exhibition and trade fairs on agro-forestry and aquatic products in order to introduce more Vietnamese products to Russian customers.

VOV: Could you predict Vietnam’s export turnover in the Russian market in the coming time?

Mr Phuong: Vietnam’s agro-forestry and aquatic exports to Russia reached more than US$1 billion in 2007 and is expected to increase by 20 percent in 2008 and even triple by the end of 2009.
