Quang Ngai hospital left overloaded by dengue fever outbreak
VOV.VN - The number of newly reported cases of dengue fever in the central province of Quang Ngai has witnessed a sharp increase following the region being hit by number of severe typhoons and localised flooding.
The past few days has seen Quang Ngai General Hospital reach maximum capacity after recording hundreds of dengue fever cases.
This strain on the hospital has led to patients being forced to bring their own folding beds due to a shortage of hospital beds.
According to a representative from the hospital, the sudden increase in dengue fever cases comes following several typhoons and spells of flooding severely hampering the region. He added that this has led the hospital to increase the number of medical staff on duty in an effort to serve patients in need.
Furthermore, since the beginning of this year Quang Ngai General Hospital has received more than 1,650 patients suffering from dengue fever.
Dengue fever is a viral infection that is transmitted to humans after being bitten by infected mosquitos. At present there is no specific treatment for dengue and vaccination options remain limited.
Patients who develop a sudden high fever of up to 40 degrees Celsius that lasts for between two and seven days, or who have other symptoms such as headaches, tenderness, and skin rashes, should visit a hospital in order to be diagnosed and receive treatment.
