The Mong Ethnic Cultural Festival is scheduled for the National Day (Sept. 2) this year in the northern mountainous province of Son La, according to the Ministry of Culture and Information.

The festival aims to honour the ethnic group's cultural identity and promote tourism in ethnic minority-inhabited areas.

The Mong (also known as H'Mong) group now has a population of around 780,000, mainly living in northern mountainous provinces. Many of them live in remote and isolated areas and still practise the slash-and-burn method of farming.

The group’s main principal food plants are corn, rice grown on scorched land, and rye. Linen plants are grown for cloth weaving material and medicinal herbs. Mong families rear cattle, dogs, horses and chickens.
