The head of NATO has pledged to provide thousands of extra troops to protect the Afghan presidential elections on August 20 to ward off the threat of Taliban attacks.

AFP said the elections were pushed back from April with the military alliance led by NATO requesting several thousand extra troops for Afghanistan's second presidential vote, which is a crucial test in its quest for democracy.

NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer told reporters in Kabul on Wednesday that the alliance had asked for four battalions of reinforcements from the 42 nations that make up the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), AFP reported.

Italy and Germany have already promised to provide more troops for Afghanistan.
