Construction of the Cam Pha thermal power plant began in Cam Pha town in the northeastern province of Quang Ninh on April 15.

In the first phase, the coal-fuelled plant will have a design capacity of 300MW. It will be built by China’s Harbin Power Company at a cost of nearly US$350 million in the form of the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract.

The second phase of the project will have a similar design capacity and the plant is expected to generate power in 2009 with a total annual output of 3.7 billion kWh. After 2010, the plant will raise its capacity to 1,200MW.
