US President Biden desires to visit Vietnam, says special envoy Kerry
VOV.VN - US President Joe Biden looks forward to visiting Vietnam, said John Kerry, said US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, in a press briefing in Hanoi on September 5.
However, there are no specific plans for this visit yet as the president is busy with other pressing issues such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict or the US-China tension, Kerry revealed.
At a meeting with his US counterpart Wendy Sherman, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ha Kim Ngoc expected that the US side would speed up Biden’s Vietnam visit that could take place this year.
Ngoc said the Biden visit would follow hard on the heels of the US working visit in May 2022 by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on the occasion of the ASEAN-US Special Summit.
During the May meeting in Washington DC, PM Pham Minh Chinh respectfully conveyed the invitation of Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and President Nguyen Xuan Phuc to President Joe Biden to visit Vietnam.
Biden said then he would arrange time for the visit at an appropriate time for both sides.
The US leader is scheduled to tour Southeast Asia in November to attend a G20 summit in Indonesia, an East Asia summit in Cambodia and an APEC summit in Thailand.
Kerry has returned to Vietnam for a visit from September 2 to 6 to build consensus on critical actions to address the climate crisis.
He is expected to meet with government officials, civil society representatives, and business leaders to address the climate crisis and accelerate energy transition.
