Installation work on SEA longest submarine cable begins

(VOV) - Installation work commenced on Southeast Asia’s longest submarine cable, in Phu Quoc island district, Kien Giang province, on November 17.

The project will eventually connect the remaining 55.8km of 110MW cable between Ha Tien town and Phu Quoc island to the national electricity grid.

Minister of Industry and Trade Vu Huy Hoang praised the efforts of the Electricity of Vietnam Southern Power Company (EVN SPC) in bringing electricity to remote regions, particularly islands and border areas.

The implementation of the state policy to provide electricity to remote provinces has contributed to significant improvements in the local economy,  and infrastructure, whilst at the same time improving better defence, security and quality of life for the  people living in these areas, said Minister Hoang.

The installation is scheduled for completion on January 13 with the aim of  providing electricity to Phu Quoc islanders before the celebration of the 2014 lunar New Year (Tet) Festival.

The project totals US$11 billion, sourced from the World Bank (WB) and the EVN SPC.
