Hoi An to expand pedestrian street space to serve visitors

VOV.VN - The ancient town of Hoi An is set to carry out plans to expand the pedestrianised area around Phan Chau Trinh Street in a bid to create a safe and friendly tourism environment for visitors without a disturbance from motor vehicles.

Pedestrian streets throughout Hoi An have been gradually expanding over the past 15 years in order to meet the demands of an increasing number of tourists to the town, and contribute to relieving traffic pressure on the heritage area.

Currently, approximately 8,000 vehicles, motorcycles, and electric bicycles pass through Phan Chau Trinh Street each day.

The plan to expand the street’s pedestrinaised areas and to stop motor vehicles is expected to come into operation in early March 2020.

During the first phase of the plan, the pedestrian zone will open between 18:00 and 21:30 in winter, before being extended to 22:00 in summer from the junction of Cao Hong Lanh - Phan Chau Trinh to the crossroads of Nguyen Hue and Phan Chau Trinh streets.

Nguyen Van Son, Vice Chairman of the Hoi An Municipal People’s Committee, said that the model will be replicated in a number of other streets, including Hoang Dieu, Phan Boi Chau, and Bach Dang in the future.
