Vietnam, Australia build practical and future-oriented relations

VOV.VN -Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son held a meeting on March 5 with his Australian counterpart Penny Wong within the framework of the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit to commemorate the 50th anniversary of ASEAN-Australia dialogue relations.

FM Son congratulated Australian Minister Wong and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for their thoughtful and thorough preparations for the 50th anniversary of ASEAN-Australia dialogue relations.

He expressed confidence that the summit will be a great success and also thanked FM Wong for carefully co-ordinating and preparing for Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's official visit.

The Vietnamese Minister expressed satisfaction with recent progress made in bilateral relations, as well as in linkages between the two foreign Ministries.

He also proposed that the two sides continue to boost closer ties to deploy support packages worth nearly AUD200 million, roughly US$130 million, on clean energy development and climate change adaptation in the Mekong Delta region that Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and FM Wong previously announced during their recent visits to Vietnam.

FM Wong expressed her joy at welcoming Minister Son to Melbourne for the first time, thanking the Government of Vietnam, as well as FM Son, personally for supporting and actively attending the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit.

She appreciated the fact that the two countries have launched a broad array of activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between both sides.

On this occasion, FM Wong invited her Vietnamese counterpart to re-visit Australia soon and co-chair the sixth Vietnam-Australia Foreign Ministers' Meeting.

On the same day, FM Son met with opposition foreign affairs spokesman Simon Birmingham, during which he expressed his appreciation for Australia's efforts to maintain socio-economic stability and take measures to respond to global economic instability, while also adopting many important bills with the support of opposition political parties.

This will help Australia to maintain its role and position in the region and the world. Minister Son said, while attributing these achievements to the positive contribution made the Liberal Party.

He also applauded Birmingham's efforts to advance joint co-operation in his position in charge of opposition diplomacy, as well as the positions he once held such as Minister of Education and Training, Minister of Finance, and Minister of Trade and Investment under the Coalition Party rule.

Birmingham affirmed that the Australian side values its relationship with Vietnam, considering the nation to be one of the important partners in the Asia-Pacific region.

He said he always monitors and appreciates recent achievements made in bilateral relations, especially co-operation in politics, economics - trade - investment, defence - security, as well as other potential areas.

Also on this occasion, FM Son had a brief meeting with Nicholas Moore, special envoy for South-East Asia.

At the meeting, Moore affirmed that Australia highly appreciates the potential for collaboration with Vietnam, especially in the fields of economics, trade, and investment. The nations therefore holds an important position in implementing Australia's Southeast Asia Economic Strategy until 2040, he added.
