Grab fined VND60 million for using map violating Vietnamese sovereignty

VOV.VN - The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Information and Communications announced on April 14 that they have fined ride-hailing firm Grab VND60 million for using a map mislabeling multiple Vietnamese islands in the Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago, as China’s.

The Department therefore asked Grab Vietnam to commit to remedy and implement measures aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future, as well as strictly complying with the Vietnamese law in business activities.

On April 10 Grab Vietnam also made an apology for the use of a map showing incorrect information regarding Vietnamese sea and island territory.

It noted that the violation does not relate to its respect for the nation and its people.

This comes after many customers had found that Grab’s map showed incorrect information about the country’s sovereign territory.

According to an article released by Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper, among the islands in Vietnamese Truong Sa, only Son Ca and Sinh Ton were labeled with their Vietnamese names, while others were displayed either in English or Chinese.

Most notably, Vanh Khan (Mischief) Reef, which belongs to Vietnam, was not labeled with the Vietnamese name, instead using English and Chinese names.

Chu Thap (Fiery Cross) Reef, which China has illegally occupied, was labeled as 'Nansha District,' the name that China illicitly uses for Vietnamese Truong Sa.
