The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) will go ahead with its export stimulus package in the first quarter of this year to help businesses increase exports and reduce the country’s dependence on imports, said MoIT Deputy Minister Nguyen Thanh Bien.

At a conference in Hanoi on February 24, Mr Bien said that the MoIT will put into place four projects, focusing on (1) boosting production and business, (2) increasing exports and reducing the trade deficit, (3) improving the efficiency of the extraction, processing, export and circulation of raw materials such as crude oil, coal and other mining products of high export value, and (4) flexibly managing border trade.

He said it will also carry out three other projects to develop the distribution network of basic commodities, regulate market-based electricity prices, and encourage businesses to offer big discounts to stimulate consumer spending.

Mr Bien said that his ministry will also introduce policies to increase trade promotion activities and expand export markets. It will tighten regulations governing the management of the market in areas concerning product quality, food safety and hygiene and strictly deal with any violations to prevent individual businesses cornering the market.

Delegates put forward ideas to boost the production of consumer goods for the domestic market, especially food, drinks, garments and pharmaceuticals. They also proposed that preferential policies be introduced to support industries that produce essential goods to replace the amount of imports, increase the use of domestic materials and employ a larger number of workers.
