Red River Delta fights floods

Early flash floods and heavy rains have caused serious damage in northeast mountainous areas.

Northern provinces are expected to be pounded with heavy rains in the coming days.

Many localities in the Red River Delta are expected to face floods. The Central Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Control has instructed localities to monitor the flood situation.

According to Ha Nam’s Ly Nhan district environmental monitoring station, the water level measured 2.4 metres on July 15, two metres below the alert level. Amid the rainy season and with Hoa Binh hydropower plant discharging, the water level may reach alert level 1, threatening residents.

Days of downpours have flooded more than 100 hectares of fields in Xuan Hong commune, Xuan Truong district, Nam Dinh province.

Xuan Truong district was most affected, with nearly 2,000 hectares of rice submerged out of its nearly 4,400 hectares. The water level continued rising, causing more damage.

Besides drainage to save the crops, the Nam Dinh provincial Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Control called on ships not to go offshore and farmers to protect their fish farms.
