Chairman of the Cuban National Assembly Ricardo Alarcon de Quesada arrived in Hanoi on June 7, beginning an official visit to Vietnam at the invitation of his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Phu Trong.

Mr Alarcon is expected to hold talks with Mr Trong before meeting with Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh and State President Nguyen Minh Triet and Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on June 8. He will then tour the northeastern province of Quang Ninh before travelling to Ho Chi Minh City.

Mr Alarcon, who is also a Politburo member of the Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee, was first elected head of the National Assembly in 1993 and then re-elected in 1998 and 2003.
