Vietnam’s top player Nguyen Tien Minh earned a berth to the quarterfinals of the ongoing 2012 Yonex Australian Badminton Open in Sydney by defeating Malaysian rival Kwong Beng Chan 2-1 on April 5.

In his first game, Minh lost 18-21 to Chan, who was then trounced by the Vietnamese player in the second game with the same score. The two players finished the third game after 75 minutes of tough competition, in which Minh easily overwhelmed the Malaysian opponent with a 21-12 score.

Minh defeated Chan at the 2009 Vietnam Challenger tournament.

In the quarterfinals, the Vietnamese player (World No. 12) will meet Alamsyah Yunus from Indonesia (World No. 32), who won 2-0 over Ji Hoon Hong from the Republic of Korea on April 5.

Minh had trounced Hong four times in past competitions.
