Vietnam pursues multilateral parliamentary diplomacy, says NA leader

VOV.VN - Vietnam pursues multilateral parliamentary diplomacy to protect common interests and address global concerns, National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue told Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) President Duarta Pacheco at a meeting in Vienna on September 6.

Attending the fifth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament (WCSP) in Vienna on September 6-9 is a chance for the Vietnamese National Assembly to promote multilateral parliamentary diplomacy and to share experiences in improving the quality and efficiency of its operation, said Hue.

He said the National Assembly of Vietnam has actively involved in promoting the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It has passed laws, examined and ratified international conventions and treaties on sustainable development.

In particular, the legislative body has timely passed a resolution, creating a legal framework for the Government to proactively implement COVID-19 prevention and control measures.

On this occasion, NA Chairman Hue put forward a number of proposals to make the IPU operate more effectively. According to the Vietnamese leader, the IPU should promote initiatives aimed at renovating its operations and enhancing its role in addressing international affairs, while further developing the partnership between the IPU and the UN.

In addition, he said the IPU should promote the implementation of tripartite cooperation projects between the IPU, its member parliaments and the UN in order to support and create conditions for the member parliaments including the National Assembly of Vietnam, to get more involved in activities of international organizations, especially in such issues as sustainable development, poverty reduction, and post coronavirus economic recovery.

Vietnam is ready to host symposiums at the request of the IPU, considering this an opportunity for it to support the IPU and improve its international cooperation capacity as well as to learn from experience, said Hue.

IPU President Duarta Pacheco welcomed Hue’s proposals and affirmed he would come to Hanoi to discuss in detail the organisation of symposiums and conferences on SDGs, economic recovery and others.

The two leaders praised the IPU’s role in promoting multilateral parliamentary diplomacy and concurred that the organisation should renovate its operation to solve global challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic.

NA Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue and his entourage arrived in Vienna on September 5 for a working trip to the European Union. He is scheduled to attend the WCSP5 on September 6-9, and then pay working visits to the European Parliament, Belgium and Finland till September 11.
