Vietnam – Japan Friendship Association holds congress in Hanoi

VOV.VN - The Vietnam – Japan Friendship Association on March 22 held a national congress in Hanoi and elected a new executive committee for the 2021-2026 tenure.

Addressing the event, Truong Thi Mai, Politburo member, Secretary of the Party Central Committee, Head of the Party Organisation Commission, praised the Association for having carried out practical and effective activities over the years, making important contributions to strengthening the friendship, mutual understanding and trust between the two peoples.

The Vietnam - Japan relations are at the best stage of development ever and there are still many opportunities to further expand the friendship and bilateral trust, she said.

According to the Vietnamese official, Japan is one of Vietnam’s leading economic partners, the largest official development aid (ODA) donor, the second largest foreign investor, the third largest tourism partner and the fourth largest trading partner.

Both countries have also recorded positive achievements in cooperation in the fields of education, security-defence, human resource development, climate change adaptation, as well as in the fight against COVID-19.

More than 450,000 Vietnamese people are living, studying and working in Japan, becoming is the second largest expat community in the country.

Mai requested that the Association continue to strengthen and expand the network of partners, and at the same time improve the efficiency of cooperation between the two countries’ people organizations in line with the framework of the Vietnam – Japan Extensive Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity in Asia.

The Association should strongly promote its role in fostering cooperation in all fields between Vietnam and Japan, especially in high technology, health care, education, human resource training, digital transformation, environmental protection, and climate change response, said Mai.

She also asked the Association to mobilize Vietnamese businesses, intellectuals and young people living and working in Japan to participate in people-to-people diplomacy through various suitable forms.

The Association elected a new executive committee, with To Huy Rua, former Politburo member of the Communist Party of Vietnam, reelected its president.

On this occasion, the Association received the Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister in recognition of its practical contributions to the Vietnam – Japan relations.
