SEA Games update: Vietnamese fencers and wrestlers win gold on May 18

VOV.VN - Bui Thi Thu Ha, Do Thi Tam, Pham Thi Thu Hoai, and Phung Thi Khanh Linh clinched the fifth gold medal for the Vietnamese fencing team on the afternoon of May 18 at the ongoing 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 31).

Putting in some excellent performances, the Vietnamese fencers were able to defeat their Singaporean rivals in the women’s sabre team event with a score of 45-39 in the final match.

Meanwhile, local female wrestlers Nguyen Thi Xuan and Kieu Thi Ly recorded a win over their Cambodia and Filipino opponents to secure gold medals in the women’s 50kg and 53kg categories, respectively.

Elsewhere, female wrestlers Dang Thi Linh and Lai Dieu Thuong also defeated their Filipino and Thai rivals in the women's 76kg and 68kg category respectively, while My Hanh and My Trang also grabbed gold medals in the women's 62kg ad 57kg categories. 

Furthermore, Vietnamese karate artist Nguyen Thi Phuong defeated her Thai rival to grab a gold medal in the kata (demonstration) category with a score of 23.68.

In the women’s javelin throw, Vietnamese athlete Lo Thi Hoang won a gold medal after breaking the SEA Games’ record with a distance of 56.37 metres.

The Vietnamese track and field athlete Pham Thi Hong Le won gold in the women's 10,000m event with a record time of 35 minutes and 56.38 seconds.

This comes after the morning of May 18 saw Vietnamese rowers secure two more gold medals in the finals of the women’s canoe double 1,000m and the men’s canoe four 1,000m.
