By May 26, organisations and individuals across the country had donated more than VND9 billion and a tonne of rice to Typhoon Chanchu victims, channelled through the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF), Vietnam Television and the Golden Heart Fund of Labour newspaper.

Speaking at a press briefing in Hanoi on May 26, VFF President Pham The Duyet thanked philanthropists for their donations to the bereaved families. He asked central organisations and Fatherland Front chapters in localities to continue relief and rescue work to help families of the victims quickly stablise their lives.

At the briefing, VFF received nearly VND600 million as contributions from central and local organisations. The Industrial General Department under the Ministry of Defence donated VND150 million, Nam Cuong Tourism and Trade Company VND100 million and Ha Nam province’s Fatherland Front Committee VND100 million.

The same day, Director General of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of Vietnam (ICB) Pham Huy Hung handed over a sum of VND565 million collected from bank officials and staff to Labour newspaper’s Golden Heart Fund.

Nguyen Dang Quang, Deputy Director General of the Education Publishing House, said the house will provide free sets of textbooks for primary, junior and senior secondary high school pupils of the victims’ families in the coming school year.     

The Ministry of Fisheries launched a donation campaign to assist the victims’ families. The Vietnam Fisheries Humanitarian Fund provided VND1 million for each family of the deceased and VND500,000 for each injured fisherman.
