The Puea Thai Party (PTP), set up recently to absorb members of parliament (MPs) from the court-dissolved former ruling People Power Party (PPP), has elected Yongyuth Wichaidit as the new party leader.

The decision was announced at a meeting on December 6, which was held in a bid to form a new coalition government in Thailand. It was earlier speculated that Yinglak Shinawatra, a sister of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, would be chosen as the leader of the PTP.

Three political parties - the PPP, Chart Thai and Matchimathipataya - were dissolved earlier last week when Thailand’s Constitutional Court ruled that they had engaged in a general electoral fraud last December.
