Prime Minister Phan Van Khai has called for ensuring a joyful but safe traditional Lunar New Year Festival (Tet), strictly practicing thrift and not presenting flowers, money and gifts to officials and leaders at all levels.

In an urgent telegram on January 6, Mr Khai urged central ministries, agencies, municipal and provincial people’s committees and State corporations to launch necessary measures to ensure safe business and production activities before and after Tet.

He stressed the need to support people living in disadvantaged areas and people of social policy beneficiaries in order to prevent starvation, visit families of fallen and disabled soldiers and heroic mothers during the holiday.

The Prime Minister asked the customs and police sectors to co-operate with local administrations at all levels to combat trade fraud and prohibit the production and trade of fake goods.

Regarding traffic safety, he said the Ministry of Public Security and relevant ministries and sectors should devise drastic measure to prevent traffic jams, accidents, fires and explosions and maintain political stability and social order.

Mr Khai also underscored the need to ensure food safety and strictly control the spread of diseases, particularly the possibility of avian flu outbreaks and human-to-human influenza infections.
