Vietnam supports moves by the United Nation Security Council (UNSC) committees and its specialist  bodies to find appropriate ways of strengthening coordinated actions with the Counter-Terrorism Implementation Task Force to put UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategies in glace.
The statement was made by Ambassador Le Luong Minh, Vietnam’s Permanent Representative to the UNSC at the council’s May 26 open debate on the last six-months’ work of the Al-Qaeda and Taliban Sanctions Committee (the 1267 Committee), the Counter-Terrorism Committee (the 1373 Committee or CTC) and the 1540 Committee in charge of monitoring the control of weapons ò mass destruction.

The Vietnamese representative acknowledged the remarkable workload shouldered by the three committees and expert bodies over the past six months.

He took note of the fact that the 1267 Committee has priotisied conducting a review process of all the names on its Consolidated List.

“Particular attention should be given to considering cases whose continued listing may no longer be appropriate, with a view to removing those names from the List,” he stressed.

The Vietnamese diplomat said that he supports the CTC’s initiative to facilitate direct dialogue between the committee and the permanent missions of UN members states in New York, to find ways of assisting member states in implementing their obligations under the related UNSC resolutions.

He went on to welcome the Program of Work for 2009 adopted by the 1540 Committee,  that focuses on the organisation of a comprehensive review of the status of implementation of Resolution 1540 to identify new approaches to promote the process while avoiding imposing unnecessary or overlapping  obligations on member states.

“Vietnam reaffirms the importance of the three committees’ mandates and their contributions to the common fight against international terrorism as well as continuing  support and cooperation with the three committees in the carrying out of their mandates,” Minh said in conclusion.
