According to an official announcement by Ukraine’s Central Election Committee, nearly 58 percent of voters cast their ballots at Ukraine’s parliamentary election, which closed on September 30.

The committee had hoped that the number of voters would reach 65-70 percent. During last year’s parliamentary elections, the number of voters reached nearly 59 percent.

In response to a reporter at an electoral district in Kiev city, Ukrainian Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych said that the election was a great challenge for all Ukrainian people and expressed his belief that his Regions Party will win in the election.

Right after casting his ballot, President Vitor Yushchenko said the political result of the parliamentary election is the result, that Ukrainian voters want so they can put all their faith in a political party and set up a new parliament.

The Russian news agency, Interfax said on September 30, according to an initial survey that after concluding the exit poll at 22:00 pm, the prime minister's Regions Party took 35.2 percent of the vote while the bloc of ex-premier Yulia Tymoshenko had only 32.4 percent with Our Ukraine pulling in 14.1 percent.

The Communist Party of Ukraine won 4.5 percent of votes while ex-parliamentary speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn's party won 3.8 percent, according to exit polls.
