Lao Minister of Industry and Commerce Nam Viyaketh visited the central province of Quang Tri on September 6 to explore trade exchanges between the two countries’ border provinces.

Le Huu Phuc, chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, briefed the Lao Minister on cooperation programmes between his province and the Lao border provinces of Savanakhet and Salavan, particularly in the Lao Bao special trade-economic zone.

The zone, located on the East-West Economic Corridor between Vietnam and Laos, has attracted 52 projects with a total combined investment capital of VND2,300 billion.

To fully exploit the marine-based economy, Mr Phuc said that Quang Tri is drafting projects to build the Dong Nam economic zone and the My Thuy deep water seaport to receive 40,000 DWT ships and shorten the transport time between Vietnamese localities and the southern Lao provinces via Quang Tri.

The Laos Minister said that the import-export value between the two countries remains modest and has not yet matched their potential. He called on border provinces to increase trade exchanges to help raise bilateral trade value to US$1 billion by 2010.
