A giraffe gave birth to a female baby at the Saigon Zoo in Ho Chi Minh City on Jan 15, making the first successful birth of the long-needed animal in Vietnam.

The newborn is 2 metres high and weighs about 60 kg, the zoo’s director Ba Dung said on January 19.

He added that the baby animal’s parents were born in Thailand in 2003 and imported to Vietnam one year later. They have been raised at the Saigon Zoo since then.

Mr Dung said that visitors to the zoo will see the giraffe family through a video screen, as the baby animal is still afraid of strangers.
