Experts have confirmed a rare plant species growing in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park in the central province of Quang Binh for the past 500 years.

Bach xanh (Calocedrus rupestris) was discovered in a recent survey by Professor Leonid Avereyanov from the Russian Khamarop Plant Institute and Professor Phan Ke Loc from the Vietnam Institute of Ecological and Biological Resources and the Phong Nha-Ke Bang Science and Rescue Centre.

They found the plants growing across more than 2,400ha of the park’s limestone mountains, between 700-1,000m above sea level.

The 500-year-old species coverage is now considered the largest in the country and is important to world conservation of the plant.
