Breakthroughs are anticipated in Vietnam's cooperative relationships with India and Sri Lanka for mutual prosperity, peace, stability and development in the region and the world.

On the evening of October 15, State President Truong Tan Sang returned to Hanoi accompanied by his wife and entourage, successfully concluding his state visit to India and Sri Lanka.

The leaders and people of India and Sri Lanka gave a warm welcome to President Sang and his delegation, praising Vietnam’s role and position in the Asia-Pacific region and affirming their top priority for developing relations with Vietnam.

During talks between the Vietnamese State President and Indian and Sri Lankan leaders, both sides agreed to boost cooperation in various fields such as politics, economics, culture, education, national security and defense, and compared notes on regional and international issues of mutual concern.

Vietnam and India issued a joint statement reiterating their determination to strengthen their ties of traditional friendship and strategic partnership.

The signing of six cooperation documents, along with agreements reached by the senior leaders to increase two-way trade to more than US$7 billion by 2015 and open a direct air route between the two countries in 2012, were specific positive results giving fresh impetus to future Vietnam-India cooperation.

Eight cooperation documents were also signed in Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan leaders and people described the first official visit by President Sang as a testament of goodwill between the two countries.

The Sri Lankan President said his country recognizes Vietnam as a full market economy and will support its candidacy for the UN Human Rights Council in the 2013-2016 term.

Both sides agreed on a number of specific measures to reach the two-way trade target of US$1 billion in the next few years.

President Sang’s successful visits to India and Sri Lanka have left deep impressions on leaders of all the countries, laying a firm foundation to strengthen their relationships in the future.
