Vietnam attaches great importance to crime prevention, said a Vietnamese official at the 12th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice held in Salvador, Brazil from April 12-19.

Vietnam has carried out a five-year national programme to prevent and control crime and attained good results, the official added.

Regarding international cooperation in the fight against criminals, the official said that Vietnam has signed treaties in the field and will sign more, and that it will strengthen international cooperation in the framework of Interpol and ASEANAPOL as well as with countries in the form of mutual judicial support.

At the conference, more than 1,600 delegates from countries and international organizations including high-ranking officials assessed the issue and shared experiences in combating criminals of all kinds across the globe.

In addition, the delegates agreed to beef up international cooperation in the prevention and control of trans-boundary and cyber crimes, human trafficking, child abuse and illegal trade in cultural articles.
