North-western provinces should focus on developing hydroelectricity, eco-tourism and culture, exploiting mineral resources and producing construction materials, emphasised deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong at an investment promotion forum held in Sapa, Lao Cai province on October 14.

Mr Trong called on the provinces to attach importance to developing relations with neighbouring countries. He also affirmed that with advantages in agriculture, forestry, mineral resources, tourism, and border gate economy, the north-western provinces are now the region which is implementing the development plan “ Two corridors, one economic belt” between Vietnam and China.

In the 2001-1010 period, the region aims to achieve an economic growth target of 11 percent per year, with GDP per capita reaching US$517.8 and investment accumulation rate of 11 percent.

This is the largest-scale economic forum in the region so far, attracting the participation of more than 500 delegates from economic groups, investment funds, local and international enterprises. The event offered a good opportunity for investors and representatives from enterprises to share experiences and seek both short and long-term business cooperation.

During the forum, 19 projects capitalised at more than US$3 billion will be licensed including four projects in Lao Cai with total investment capital of US$500 million.
