The Republic of Korea (RoK) will gradually reduce its military presence in Iraq by one-third by the end of this year, according to the RoK Defense Ministry.

The RoK plans to withdraw about 1,000 of its 3,200-member contingent stationed in northern Iraq this year, Maj. Gen. Chung Seung-jo, chief of the Korean troops stationed in the Kurdish region of Irbil in northern Iraq, said, adding that troop reduction will begin in April.

The RoK has the third largest contingent in the US-led allied forces in Iraq, after the US and Britain.
