Vietnam’s seaports handled 177.6 million tonnes of cargo in 2007, a year-on-year increase of 12.7 percent, according to the Vietnam Maritime Administration (Vinamarine).

The volume of cargo handled at ports in Hai Phong and Ho Chi Minh City recorded year-on-year rises of 40 percent and 17.28 percent, respectively.

The administration has carried out a number of projects to increase the ports’ handling capacity. They include projects to dredge the Cai Lan wharf’s passage and to build maritime search and rescue centres in northern Hai Phong port city, central Da Nang city and southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau province.
