Vietnamese amateur photographer Nguyen Quoc Hung has won the “Decent Work for People with Disabilities” prize in the Asia-Pacific photographic competition held in Bangkok, Thailand, on December 3.

Hung’s winning photo “Net Casting” was a stunning sepia image of a man with one arm, casting his fishing net while standing on the edge of his small fishing boat. The man in the photo lives in the southern province of Dong Nai’s Tri An Lake and earns his living mainly by fishing.

Irish Ambassador Maeve Collins congratulated Hung, a Logistic Officer of Japan Vietnam Petroleum in Vung Tau, and confirmed that Irish Aid will continue to play a meaningful role in supporting people with disabilities in Vietnam.

The competition drew nearly 250 pictures from 19 countries across the Asia-Pacific region. The second prize went to Thoi Luu Thuan, another Vietnamese photographer.

The competition was organised by the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Disabled Peoples’ International (DPI) and Irish Aid to promote understanding within Asia-Pacific people with disabilities, their right to decent work and contribution to the workplace.

Irish Aid is the Ireland Government’s programme of assistance. Ireland has recently completed a strategy for development assistance in Vietnam over the next four years with the overall budget of €87.5 million.
