Preparations underway for National Day amnesty

The granting of amnesty to prisoners demonstrates the Party and State's policy of humanity and clemency for those who have shown repentance.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc made the remarks during his tour to Ninh Khanh prison in the northern province of Ninh Binh on August 18 to inspect its preparations for the grand amnesty on the occasion of National Day (September 2).

Phuc, who is also President of the Central Amnesty Advisory Council for 2013, praised the prison staff in education and management work, especially the dissemination of the upcoming amnesty to all prisoners.

According to the Deputy PM, the prison has ensured the transparency, democracy, equality and justice of the process.

In 2012, more than 17,000 prisoners was released in an amnesty programme to mark the National Day, according to government statistics.

Vietnam typically grants amnesty to prisoners on major national holidays, including the Lunar New Year (Tet) and Reunification Day.
