A delegation from the Vietnamese National Assembly (NA) led by NA Vice Chairman Uong Chu Luu visited Chile on July 3-5 to foster ties between the two legislative bodies.

This was the first high-ranking NA delegation to visit Chile since the two countries established diplomatic ties in 1971.

During his time in Chile, NA Vice Chairman Luu met with the Chilean Senate Chairman Medina; Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Nicolas M.Diaz; Minister of Foreign Affairs Alfredo Moreno Charme; and Minister of Justice Teodoro Ribera; as well as President of the Chile-Vietnam Parliamentary Friendship Group Claudia Fernandez; President of the Chile-Vietnam Culture Institute Patricia Abarzua; and Chilean lawyer Gaston Gomez, among others.

The Chilean leaders and partners expressed their admiration for Vietnam and spoke highly of the bilateral ties of solidarity and traditional friendship established by late President Allende and late President Ho Chi Minh.

The two sides agreed to boost economic and trade cooperation and raise two-way trade turnover to US$10 billion in the next 10 years as suggested by Chilean President Sebastian Pinera during his visit to Vietnam in March.

They highlighted fine development of relations between the two parliaments and emphasized the role parliaments play in implementing signed agreements as well as in sharing experiences regarding constitutions, legislation, execution and other relevant fields.

Chile is willing to act as a bridge for Vietnamese products to penetrate the Latin American market and Vietnam offered to be a gateway for Chile to expand its markets in Southeast Asia.

NA Vice Chairman Luu praised Chile’s economic achievements which have helped raise its position in Latin America and also conveyed an invitation to visit Vietnam from NA Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung to Speaker of the Chilean Chamber of Deputies Nicolas Diaz.
