The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) chapter in the central highland province of Gia Lai will hold a requiem on July 27 to commemorate war martyrs at Duc Co District Cemetery.

The cemetery is home to approximately 1,200 graves of soldiers who laid down their lives on the battlefields for national independence and freedom, and accomplished their international mission in Laos and Cambodia.

The mass will be attended by more than 2,300 Buddhist monks, nuns and followers in the province.

Superior Monk Thich Tu Huong, member of the VBS Executive Council and head of the Gia Lai provincial Buddhist Executive Council, says the mass is in the lead up to the War Invalid and Martyrs Day (July 27), Buddha’s Day next month and Hanoi’s millennial celebration in October.

Buddhists will also light candles to honour the fallen combatants and pray for peace and prosperity for the nation.
