Border guards rescue young Vietnamese girl trafficked to Cambodia

VOV.VN - Officers at the Ha Tien International Border Gate in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang, working in conjunction with Cambodian authorities, have rescued a Vietnamese girl who had been trafficked into the neighbouring country as a forced worker.

Accordingly, N.D.T, 15, residing in Thai Nguyen city, northern Vietnam, had fallen victim to a human trafficking scam in Cambodia.

After receiving information about the scam, Ha Tien border guards in collaboration with competent Cambodian agencies launched a plan on January 29 to rescue the girl, who was being illegally kept at Khnhum casino in Kampot province.

The young girl then told the police that due to a conflict with her family, she had decided to look for a job on social media and was then tricked and sold to Cambodia.

A further investigation into the case is now underway.

Many human trafficking and bonded labour cases in Cambodia have been exposed, and one of the most dramatic cases was documented in 2022 when 42 people escaped a casino. They swam across the Binh Di River, the natural border between Vietnam and Cambodia. A total of 40 made the journey, whilst one was captured and one teenager drowned.

Authorities say there are possibly thousands of people who have been tricked and trafficked into Cambodia, ending up as bonded labourers. They are typically held against their will on establishment promises and not paid the salaries or given the working conditions promised.
