Khuong Duy becomes youngest Vietnamese player to reach International Master

VOV.VN - Dau Khuong Duy, 11, has been the youngest Vietnamese chess player to reach the International Master (IM) standard following his stellar performance at the Bangkok Open 2022, which was held in Thailand from October 22 to October 30.

Duy competed in nine matches, including in three games against Grandmasters (GM) and three matches against International Masters (IM).

The local boy recorded a total of four wins, four draws, and one loss, gaining a total of six points and adding 171.2 points to his Elo ranking in the process.

The 11-year-old player drew against three GMs, including Priasmoro Novendra (Elo 2,512), Smerdon David (Elo 2,508), and Schebler Gerhard (Elo 2,374). In addition, he defeated two IMs with a higher Elo rating, including Ikeda Junta (Elo 2,444) and De Guzman Ricardo (Elo 2,352).

Duy had a total Elo rating of 2,393 and claimed the third position in the U18 category. He also ranked 16th out of 144 chess players at the tournament.

This comes following Duy winning both the individual and team titles in the U12 rapid chess at the 2022 Asian Youth Championship.
