General Giap and Mr Aubrac recalled memories of French friends who provided whole hearted support and valuable assistance to the Vietnamese people during their past struggle for national liberation and independence.
Mr Aubrac conveyed his warmest regards to General Giap and his family, and said for many French people, General Giap and Vietnam’s protracted resistance wars are seen as the symbol of the solidarity spirit and iron will in fighting against imperialism and gaining national independence.
Mr Aubrac said he was impressed by the country’s rapid changes in various fields in recent times, from infrastructure construction projects to people’s living conditions. Young Vietnamese people are very dynamic, creative and strong-minded. He said the achievements were attributed to the correct leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam and late President Ho Chi Minh.
Mr Aubrac, 93, told Mr Giap about his meetings with President Ho Chi Minh, including the first one in Fontainebleau in 1946.
General Giap thanked Mr Aubrac and other French friends for their good sentiments towards Vietnam, and conveyed best regards to them.
