Vietnamese writer Bao Ninh has become one of the winners of 2011 Nikkei Asia Prizes, which recognize achievements that contribute to the improved well-being of Asian people.

Speaking at the award ceremony, Susumu Nakanishi, honourary professor of Kyoto City University and member of the judging panel, emphasized the humanitarian value of Bao Ninh’s novel “"The Sorrow of War”.

People have done all they can to prevent wars but they still occur, said professor Nakanishi, adding that only an aspiration for peace can prevent wars.

Bao Ninh said he was honoured to receive the prestigious prize and expressed his sympathy for the victims of the tsunami that hit Japan in March. He also expressed his wish that wars will be completely abolished in the 21st century.

Since the Japanese version of the “"The Sorrow of War” was first published in 2008, 10,000 copies have been printed and welcome by Japanese readers, said  Kawade Shobo Shinsha Publisher.

Bao Ninh was the third Vietnamese who received the prize, after film director Dang Nhat Minh (2006) and professor Vo Tong Xuan (2002).

Nikkei Asia Prizes, launched by Nikkei Inc. in 1996, honors individuals and groups in Asia, excluding Japan, who have made significant contributions in three areas: regional growth; science, technology and innovation; and culture.

The selection committee is presided over by Shoichiro Toyoda, honorary chairman of Nippon Keidanren.
