Party leader meets with Prince Charles

(VOV) - Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong on January 23 met with Prince Charles in London’s Clarence House during his visit to the United Kingdom.

He briefed his host on the results of his meetings with British leaders, especially his talks with Prime Minister David Cameron and the signing of a number of cooperation documents.

Vietnam attaches great importance to developing relations with the UK, considering it a key partner in the country’s foreign policy, Trong said.

He expressed belief that his visit will contribute to strengthening the Vietnam-UK strategic partnership substantially and efficiently.

Both host and guest agreed that Vietnam and the UK need to increase delegation exchanges to maximize their potential for cooperation in economics, trade, investment, facilitate British business operations in Vietnam, and accelerate Vietnamese commodities’ penetration in the UK and the European Union.

They also underlined the need to boost cooperation in education-training, culture and tourism.

Prince Charles expressed the UK’s wish to strengthen cooperation with Vietnam in agricultural production, aquaculture and seafood processing, forestry development, and the protection of the environment and wild animals.

Party leader Trong invited Prince Charles to re-visit Vietnam, and the Prince said the visit will be arranged at an appropriate time.

The same day, Trong joined Foreign Secretary William Hague in a luncheon, discussing ways to bolster bilateral relations.

During Trong’s visit, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc met with the UK-Vietnam Friendship Parliamentarian Group, focusing on the Doi Moi (Renewal) achievements in Vietnam. He also observed Prime Minister Cameron’s hearing at the House of Commons.

At a meeting with the Lord Mayor of London, Roger Gifford, and representatives of British companies, Phuc briefed them on Vietnam’s incentive policies to attract foreign investment into high-tech, infrastructure development and banking industries.

Vietnam creates the best possible conditions for British investors to seek partnerships and operate efficiently in the country, said Phuc.

He expressed his hope that the City of London, with a wealth of experience in finance, will play an important role in fostering the economic, trade and investment links between Vietnam and the UK.

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong made official visits to Belgium, the European Union, Italy and the UK from January 16-24.
