Binh Thuan province is instructing the seafood sector to control export seafood enterprises and assess the strengths and weaknesses of each unit as well as the whole sector to devise specific solutions for the sector.

Seafood is one of Binh Thuan province’s economic strengths. The province has nearly 8,000 ships and boats including 1,000 operating offshore with an annual seafood output of more than 150,000 tonnes. However, the seafood processing industry’s export turnover remains low due to its obsolete equipment. The province is doing its best to help it quickly integrate into the world economy, especially after Vietnam has officially become the 150th member of the World Trade Organisation.

President of the provincial Seafood Processing Association, Nguyen Duc Tien said the association will help export seafood enterprises invest in advanced technology and diversify products and produce new products to meet the market’s demands. In the future, the association will cooperate with the provincial trade promotion centre in setting up a website to introduce its products through the Internet, and to help establish its own trademarks. In addition, the association will create favourable conditions for its members to take part in international trade fairs and exhibitions to advertise their trademarks. Mr Tien said the province is facing difficulties in the fields of science and technology due to poor management. Therefore, it is necessary for the province to have training programmes on human resources and management.

Currently, seafood processing enterprises in Binh Thuan are organising training courses to improve knowledge and professional skills for workers, as well as technical and communication skills for managers.

The Binh Thuan Provincial People’s Committee has asked the aquaculture sector to supervise business operations of seafood processing enterprises in order to work out effective measures for the export sector to overcome its disadvantages. The committee has also called for more investment in developing its infrastructure, electricity grids, and water supply and drainage networks.

According to deputy chairman of the Binh Thuan Provincial People’s Committee, Nguyen Van Thu, the province is implementing measures to collect material sources for export. At present, Binh Thuan is promoting off-shore fishing, and managing seafood sources.

More importantly, Binh Thuan should complete a system to test antibiotic residue in seafood for export. It is also essential for functional agencies to strictly punish violations of the marine ecological environment and antibiotic residue in seafood preservation in order to improve seafood quality and ensure food hygiene and safety.
